Why Does Fitness Have to Be So Expensive?

Did you ever notice that even the simplest things can be made into something expensive? Let me give you an example. What about the “shape-up” shoes or other similar types of shoes that claim to help you lose weight while you walk? While a good pair of shoes does make a difference, I find it interesting that a pair of shoes that costs well over $100 can make such a claim. Now if you own a pair don’t get ready to send me a note about how great the shoes are. I’m not saying they aren’t great. All I am … Continue reading

Finding the Right Fit

Think of the most popular shoe for pregnant women. It’s not spike heels (let’s hope). I’ve seen plenty of wedges, but they can’t be the most comfortable. Flip flops are pretty common. Most often, I see pregnant women wearing flats: usually the ballet style with a tiny strap and a cute print. In reality, flat shoes aren’t much better than heals when it comes to staying comfortable and preventing foot problems like swelling and pain. Ideally, you should wear a shoe with a small heal (over an inch, but under two) to shift your weight slightly forward, and a well … Continue reading

When Your Ring No Longer Fits

It happened very quickly. I woke up one morning and my hands felt slightly stiff. As I curled my fingers and tried to make a fist I realized they felt… fat. I managed to turn on the light, only to see what looked like someone else’s hand, with fingers that could only be described as marshmallows. Ah, pregnancy induced edema: it’s not just “cankles” you have to worry about. The part that bothered me the most was the fact that my wedding ring no longer fit. I don’t wear a lot of rings, but my wedding ring is very special … Continue reading

Taming the Preschool Beast

Nothing unleashes a preschooler’s inner beast quite like extracting him from a fun environment without advanced warning. When my daughter was 4 years old she had an epic outburst at a children’s museum in Chicago because I failed to give her proper notification of our departure.  In doing so, I robbed her of the gradual transition I knew she needed in order to calmly exit the building. The fit she threw nearly got us thrown out of the museum. Looking back, my preschooler’s tantrum, which included tossing her shoes down a slide, was simply her way of staying true to … Continue reading

Temporary and Permanent Changes

I experienced many changes with my first pregnancy. Some of these changes were permanent while others were only temporary. Some of these changes were good while others where entirely unwanted. Change is inevitable and a necessary part of life. I experienced more changes in that 9 month period than I did in my entire life. Temporary Changes: I experienced chronic fatigue and nausea accompanied by frequent vomiting from week 5 through week 15 of my first pregnancy. I also gained weight steadily in my 2nd and 3rd trimesters. With a sustained diet and exercise, I was able to lose most … Continue reading

Pre-Halloween Safety Reminders

Can your child see clearly through his ninja mask? Is the hem on your daughter’s princess costume short enough for her to run from house to house without tripping? These are just some of the questions parents should be asking themselves in the days before Halloween. After all, the last place you want to go trick-or-treating on October 31st is the hospital emergency room. Safety should be the number one priority for parents as their kids make a mad dash for free chocolate and other sugary treats. If you are looking to protect your little ghosts and goblins from potential … Continue reading

Saving? Don’t Go Shopping.

It seems obvious. I mean, you save money by saving money, don’t you? Yes and no. In previous blogs, I’ve written about investing in home renovations and new appliances that can help you save on your energy bill. There’s also bulk buying of food, which saves us a lot of money. However, there’s one trick that I need to use more often, and it’s totally effective. To save, don’t go shopping. I can hear you rolling in the aisles. It’s so simple. Of course you know that. However, when I’m trying to save money, one of the first things that … Continue reading
