Wedding Rings and Gender Roles, Pt. 1

The practice of wearing wedding rings has roots in ancient Egypt. The Egyptians might have believed that circles represent eternity, fitting for a marriage vow. Wearing the rings on our left hand dates to the Roman era: Romans apparently believed that the fourth finger on our left hands had a vein that went directly to the heart. While women have worn wedding (and engagement) rings for centuries, the practice of men donning the former only dates to the 20th century. Some sources speculate that it had to do with World War II: men started wearing the rings while deployed, as … Continue reading

Make Sure Your Ex is Off Your Health Insurance

If you have health insurance, then you most likely got it as a benefit of your job. You probably added your spouse to the policy so that he or she was covered as well. If you end up getting a divorce, then your ex is no longer eligible for coverage through your health insurance. This doesn’t necessarily mean that your ex actually stopped using your insurance, however. You may want to check on that. When a couple gets divorced, this can cause changes to every type of insurance policy that either person had their name on while they were still … Continue reading

What to Do With the Family Jewels

Genealogists tend to collect up a lot of important papers. You probably have copies of your ancestor’s birth certificates, obituaries from relatives, and tons of old family photos. The Unthinkable Has Happened.

The unthinkable has happened. My husband is no longer wearing his wedding ring. No, he’s not about to trade me in for a newer model. His ring simply became too tight. I have been telling him for ages it needed to be cut off but he kept resisting and insisting it was okay, even though to me it looked like to was cutting his finger in two. But yesterday reality struck home. His finger got so sore that the ring needed to be removed. Of course my husband thought it was just one more thing a handyman ought to be … Continue reading

Vision Changes During Pregnancy

When I got pregnant, I expected to see some changes. I didn’t, however, expect changes in what I could see. I was very surprised to discover that my eyes had changed. First, my contacts became too uncomfortable to wear. Then, while wearing my glasses, it felt like my prescription had changed. I learned from my optometrist that both phenomenons were directly related to my pregnancy. The same water retention that was causing my wedding ring to get stuck on my finger and the tops of my feet to bulge out of my flats, was also causing my contact lenses to … Continue reading

When Your Ring No Longer Fits

It happened very quickly. I woke up one morning and my hands felt slightly stiff. As I curled my fingers and tried to make a fist I realized they felt… fat. I managed to turn on the light, only to see what looked like someone else’s hand, with fingers that could only be described as marshmallows. Ah, pregnancy induced edema: it’s not just “cankles” you have to worry about. The part that bothered me the most was the fact that my wedding ring no longer fit. I don’t wear a lot of rings, but my wedding ring is very special … Continue reading

When Your Wedding Ring No Longer Fits

Swelling is common in pregnancy. The amount of swelling you will experience depends on several factors, including how much weight you gain and the amount of water you retain during the pregnancy.
