Why Your Pre-Teen Quit Playing Sports

One way to encourage your child to get a healthy amount of exercise is to make it fun. Sports offer kids the ability to exercise while having fun, the chance to learn how to play as a team, and a good way to develop athletic skills. Despite these benefits, 70% of kids quit sports by the age of 13. Here are some reasons why that happens. It stopped being fun. Have you ever watched kindergartners play soccer against another team of kindergarteners? What happens is both adorable and amusing. They sit down when they get tired, and start playing with … Continue reading

Senator Rubio Resigns to Spend More Time With Family

California Senator Michael Rubio, a Democrat, has resigned his position. The main purpose for doing so appears to be an interest in being able to spend more time with his family. He and his wife have two daughters, one of whom has Down Syndrome. The former Senator has taken a job with Chevron. I imagine that it would be quite difficult to be a Senator and to find a way to balance that with family life. I am certain that parents, of any profession, face that same challenge. However, when a parent who is not a public figure changes jobs … Continue reading

We All Have Our Reasons

I recently met a woman at the gym and we’ve become gym buddies. Last week after our Zumba class we were in the parking lot talking. She knows I’m a single mother and she confided in me that she is thinking of asking her husband for a divorce. I told her I was sorry and asked what the problem was, her answer? He drives a truck for a living and is gone most of the time, she is tired of him never being home. I took her out to coffee and we talked more. Her stance on single parenthood is … Continue reading

What is that Weird Tape on Some Olympic Athletes

I first noticed it on one of the Chinese synchronized divers, a couple of strips of bright blue align=”left” tape in two lines down her back. Did she have an injury? Was the tape a sort of rebellious fashion statement or a good luck charm? Was it some sort of pre-olympic ritual? I was curious but let it go. Then, the tape started popping up on other athletes. The German volley ball player with all sorts of thin weird stripes down her abdomen, and then, an American, Kerri Walsh Jennings, the beach volley ball star, had some on her shoulder. … Continue reading

Why I Thought My Grandma Didn’t Love Me

It’s funny how years and maturity can change your view of things from your childhood. I know all memories are colored by time and usually we have a rosier view of the past than we did at the time but sometimes, it’s warranted. My father died when I was a toddler so every summer I got to spend a week or two with my father’s mother, Grandma D. My father’s family all lived out of state so we didn’t see them on a regular basis. I remember as a child feeling unloved by my grandmother and one of the reasons … Continue reading

Old Man Winter vs. Tired Mama

We’re only a month into winter and I’m already counting the days until summer. Actually, I will settle for any season free of snow, ice, and sub-zero wind chills. In most parts of the world that would be spring, but I reside in Wisconsin, where it can (and often does) snow in June. Did I mention the state’s unofficial motto is: “Welcome to the land of two seasons: winter and construction.” It would be funny if it were not the cold, hard truth. I complained a lot about living in the Frozen Tundra when I was single. Partly, because I … Continue reading

Princess Sofia the First: Let’s Hope She’s the Last

Next year Princess Sofia the First, the newest and youngest of Disney’s royalty, will make her debut. She’s going to star in a movie that will air sometime in the next few months on both the Disney Channel and Disney Junior. Her royal highness is only still just a child, with her main peer group (i.e., the ages at which Sofia is directed) being children between the ages of 2 and 7. Sofia’s a true Disney original; unlike any of her predecessors she’s not based on a pre-existing character from a fairy tale, myth, or historical event. She’s going to … Continue reading

The “Morning Person” Gene Has Been Discovered

Are you a “Morning Person”, or a “Night Owl”? Whatever your answer to that question happens to be, it is due to your genes. Scientists have discovered a gene that influence sleep duration. This could help explain why some people find that they are much sleepier during the day than they are at night. I am definitely not a morning person. I would much rather do my work late in the evening, (and into the wee hours of the morning). I have problems waking up earlier than noon, even if an alarm is set. Sometimes, I wonder if my chronic … Continue reading

Why?

Ok, today’s entry may seem like a rant and if so I apologize at the beginning. When we started the adoption process 12 years ago I was told by a member of my husband’s immediate family that “you can never love an adopted child the same as you can a biological.” When this was said we did not have our kids yet but we were in the process. This particular person thought we were adopting so that we could have the first grandchildren yes she said it. I do not know where this person got their reasoning. We were the … Continue reading
