Are You a Baby Talk Basher?

Are you guilty of slapping on a smile when speaking to a baby and letting loose on nauseatingly annoying phrases like: “Coochie, coochie coo you cutesy wootsey cutie patootie! Does my little poopsie woopsie need a fresh diapey wipey?” Baby talk. For some parents it’s their best friend, while other moms and dads view the high-pitched, jibber jabber as their worst enemy. If you do a lot of baby-talking in public places, you might end up with more enemies than friends, but that’s no reason to tone down your shrill sentences, at least according to some pediatric speech and language … Continue reading

Wonder Twins

If you thought having twins would reduce the number of individual birthday parties you had to host each year, you might want to chat with some parents who learned the hard way that giving birth to multiples doesn’t always mean having children that share the same date of birth. Case in point: Beckett and Freya Humenny. The brother and sister are twins, but they weren’t born on the same day. In fact, they weren’t even born in the same year. According to news reports, the twins’ mom went into labor on December 31, 2011, five weeks before her due date. … Continue reading

Genetics Influence Your Ability to Quit Smoking

Are you a smoker who is having great difficulty quitting? Part of the reason you are struggling so much could be due to your genetics. A study that focused on twins, and their smoking habits, revealed that there is a genetic link that influences people to start smoking, (and affects how hard it is for them to quit). I have plenty of smokers in my family. My mother has two brothers, and both of them smoke. One of my brothers is a smoker. My father has at least two siblings that spent many years smoking. This is the sort of … Continue reading

Rare Genetic Deficiency Causes Obesity In One of a Pair of Twins

Are their twins in your family? I’ve heard it said that the possibility of having twins tends to run in families, but there is some debate about if that is fact or fiction. It’s also been said that obesity tends to run in families. A rare genetic condition has caused a teenage twin in the UK to be obese, even though the other twin is not obese. Could both of those genetic factors run in families? There are two types of twins: identical, and fraternal. Identical twins share the exact same DNA with one another. A pair of identical twins … Continue reading

Everybody’s Sick! What Do You Do?

Two of my favorite people in the world welcomed twins into their family back in July. They are amazing parents — at least in my humble opinion. It certainly doesn’t seem easy to have twins, but they make it look good. This month, they both got sick. Some sort of upper respiratory crud — not the flu, hopefully, because everybody had their flu shots — that lingered on and on, sapping energy on top of making them feel miserable. I was talking to mom as they were starting to get better… and she commented that she practically hadn’t seen dad … Continue reading

Be Glad You Aren’t These Parents

What would you do if you learned that your 11-year-old son had been suspended from school? Would you: A. Ground him for life B. Ship him off to military school C. Punch his principal for what you consider to be an unfair punishment If you answered “C,” then you might want to reconsider after hearing what happened to a Rhode Island mom after she went the same route. According to reports, 30-year-old Aleyda Uceta allegedly punched and bit her son’s school principal after she was told the boy was being suspended. No kidding. Police say Uceta attacked the principal of … Continue reading

Activities for Your Baby–Introduction

Recently in the forums, someone asked about what types of activities she could do with her twins who are still under the 3 month mark. Many of us seasoned moms said just taking them out, talking to them, singing to them etc. would be sufficient. Let me say first that I absolutely agree with just trying to incorporate as much interaction as possible into your day. However, this mom has twins and I know first hand that it’s a little difficult to interact with both of them at the same time in the same way you do with a singleton. … Continue reading

Parenting Multiples: The Strain of Always Having to Share

My twins are almost three and now that I’m out of the fog of sleep deprivation and constant feedings, diaper changes, and other baby care duties–I have to say that having twins is a blast. Someone asked me recently if there was anything remarkable about the way they developed verses how singletons develop and what was the hardest part of parenting multiples. No doubt, had you asked me one year ago I would’ve answered that sleep deprivation was the hardest part of parenting multiples. By 5 or 6 months, all of my children woke once in the middle of the … Continue reading

Twinsurance?

There is no doubt that twins cause a serious impact on finances. I think most people automatically think about double the diapers, two strollers and two car seats. . .not to mention feeding and clothing two (or more) little bundles of joy! On top of that, many mothers of multiples take longer leave to accommodate twins in the NICU, and some families (like ours) find that going back to work in any type of capacity simply isn’t feasible. If mom does go back to work and there isn’t an adult to stay home with the babies, add child care costs … Continue reading

The Things You Shouldn’t (or Can’t) Force

Babies come with a mind of their own. I don’t believe they’re a blank slate, but rather already have a distinctive personality. If you really don’t believe me, have a set of twins. Twins are interesting to watch because as far as controlling variables on the nature vs. nurture front, this is as close as it’s going to come. But I digress. Having been the baby blogger here for soon to be two years (I can’t believe it’s been that long), I often find my e-mail and private messages boxes full of questions on how to get your baby to … Continue reading
