You Will Forget All Of This

by Kim Neyer | More from this Blogger

This week I put together a book about my pregnancy and my son's birth. I collected pictures of ultrasounds, my baby belly and the delivery and paired them up with excerpts from my blog and journal. As I was reading through old blog entries (most of these were private, not publicly posted), I could not believe how much detail I had already forgotten about my pregnancy. I forgot how miserable I was at times! I forgot how tired I was. When I looked at pictures, I realized I had forgotten how big I was!

Some of you reading this are likely in the trenches of pregnancy right now. You want this baby so badly, but getting there is wearing on you. What so many mommies out there forget the second their babies are placed in their arms, is how hard it can be to carry a baby for 40+ weeks! Something happens to us and the memory of anything negative fades. Eventually it is such a distant memory that we want to do it all over again, thinking it will be a walk in the park. We say things like, "oh it wasn't that bad..."

After reading my old blogs, I'm thinking, "wow, it was that bad!"

This story has three morals. First of all, take the time to write a journal while you are pregnant. Write about your symptoms, your expectations, your fears and your experiences. I promise, you will love reading it again a year from now. Second, you are justified in thinking that pregnancy stinks sometimes. Nobody would get pregnant just for fun if it didn't involve having a baby at the end of those nine months. Third, rest assured that you will forget all about everything negative you are experiencing right now. You will remember if prompted, of course, but it will no longer be your focus. Just keep telling yourself, "this too shall pass."
