It’s Not Just a Belly…

If you have ever been pregnant, you know how big that belly can get during the final month. It sticks out so far from your usual waistline that it feels like you’ve stuffed a beach ball up your shirt. It kind of looks like it, too! Even though it can be heavy and make rolling over in bed almost impossible, it is still fun to have a big baby belly. It can be useful as well. Did you know there are many more things you can do with your portable table than spill your ice cream on it? 1. Mouse … Continue reading

How to Create a Stop Motion Movie of Your Pregnancy

A fun way to track your belly growth throughout your pregnancy is to make a stop-motion movie. If you have a digital camera and the right software, such as Virtual Dub, and you’re willing to take a picture a few times a week, it’s simple to create a short movie of your belly growing. You will enjoy watching it for years to come! First, pick a time of day during which you will be able to take your photo each time. You want to take the photo at the same time each day so that the light is the same. … Continue reading

Most of the visible changes during pregnancy all happen around your midsection. Sleuths and Guide Dogs: The Many “Eyes” of Joani Ascher, Part I

Author and Seeing Eye puppy raiser, Joani Ascher “Eyes” seem to be a theme when it comes to Joani Ascher, author of the Wally Morris Mystery series from Avalon Books. For one, she spends many a day crafting intrigue for her character, Wally (who, don’t let the name fool you, is a woman), to become entangled with. Wally’s not a private eye exactly, but she’s definitely a crime-solving sleuth of sorts. For another, Ms. Ascher raises Seeing Eye puppies. I asked her if she’d have time to spare from her writing and puppy duties to answer a few questions. To … Continue reading

Navel Rings and Pregnancy

About a third of women have their navel pierced at some point, so it stands to reason that having a pierced belly button and being pregnant at the same time can’t be all that uncommon. As you can imagine, trying to keep the jewelry in during pregnancy presents a few problems. Most navel jewelry is not long enough to withstand the amount of stretching that the belly button goes through in late pregnancy, and leaving it in can cause ripping or infection. For those women who wish to keep their piercing during pregnancy, there are special navel rings available that … Continue reading

The Many Uses for a Baby Bump

I love to lie on my stomach. Sometimes I’ll sprawl out over my bed with a book. Other times I’ll prop my head up on my hands and watch a movie on the couch. Many times I like to sleep on my stomach as well. It’s very comfortable…. unless you have a big baby belly. Lying on my stomach was one of the things I missed most during my pregnancy. After I had my son, I couldn’t wait to go to sleep and not have to lie on my back anymore. Even though my belly was in the way, it … Continue reading

How To Hide a Bump

Usually when we’re talking about maternity clothes on this blog, we’re talking about ways to dress around the bump, but sometimes it’s necessary to hide it. The most common reason for hiding a pregnancy is if you are an actress playing a role that does not involve a pregnancy. You might also hide a pregnancy if you feel your job is at stake, such as during an interview. Even though it is unethical, women do sometimes get turned down for positions because they are pregnant. I’m sure there are other reasons a woman might want to hide a pregnancy, at … Continue reading

What a Navel Idea!

I am thinking about belly buttons tonight: specifically, belly buttons and their unique relationship with pregnancy. Our navels go through so much during pregnancy. They are stretched, flattened, and turned inside out to the point that some of them never fully recover. Ever since I had my son, my belly button looks sad. The section of skin above the belly button (the part that is often pierced) droops slightly over my “innie” like a frown. I laugh at it, actually. It is just one of my “mommy badges” that I carry proudly. You probably never gave your belly button much … Continue reading

Bellies of All Shapes and Sizes

Does your belly hang low? Do you waddle to and fro? Can you put on your own socks? Can you paint your pinky toe? Do you grab your husband’s shoulder So you don’t go tumbling over? Does your belly – hang – low? I’ve noticed a trend among women when talking about belly shapes and sizes during pregnancy. All women want this small, compact beach ball out in front of them. When they start looking “pregnant in the back,” they become ashamed of the way they look! They assume they are putting on too much weight. Chances are it is … Continue reading
