How to Prepare Your Wardrobe for the Holidays

Have you ever found yourself at the last minute trying to find a tie or a belt or a clean dress shirt for someone? Between holiday parties and various holiday events, such as Christmas choir, I am afraid that I have found myself in that situation. I remember last year, having to run out the night before a concert to get dress pants, shirt and tie for my oldest son, who grew out of his dressy clothes. The run to the store was not fun, and I probably paid more than I should have paid, because I was in an … Continue reading

Fall/Winter Maternity Wardrobe

I have put off maternity clothes shopping for a little while for two reasons. First, I want to make sure that the maternity clothes that I do buy fit me and are comfortable when I really need them. Second, most of the clothes in the maternity boutiques have been summer apparel and sun dresses and shorts really do not work very well in the fall and winter weather. The one time I did go maternity clothes shopping this summer was with my pregnant sister. Ironically, I actually did find a couple of “long shirt/dress tops” that would work really well … Continue reading

Shopping with Your College Freshman

My soon-to-be first grader and I were back-to-school shopping at Wal-Mart a couple of weeks ago when we ran into a friend who was shopping with her soon-to-be college freshman daughter. My pal’s baby is finally flying the coop. She will be attending college in the southern part of our state. Far enough away from her parents’ house to feel free, but close enough to call for help–and get it—-in times of crisis. My daughter hugged my arm, as I spoke to my friend and I couldn’t help but look down at her, and then over to my pal’s daughter … Continue reading

Getting Your Maternity Wardrobe in Gear for Fall

Now that the highs are getting lower and the lows are frigid, your maternity wardrobe might need a little adjusting. Don’t pack up the t-shirts yet, though, there are still some ways you can wear them. Here are some tips for transitioning from warm-weather clothes to fall fashions: 1. Pick up some open front sweaters that zip, tie or button to wear over your summer tanks and tees. Muted grays and charcoals will complement the bright colors and are this season’s shade of choice. Long sweaters are in style, so find one that falls just past your hips. 2. Tights … Continue reading

Frugalista Fashions: Have you done your winter shopping yet?

I realize it is July 10. So why would I be suggesting winter shopping? Well, the answer is that you have exactly 20 days to get into the stores and snatch up last years winter left-overs for next to nothing. True, your options may be limited, and styles a little outdated, but it would be silly to not purchase mainstays for your wardrobe while they are still cheap; before the new fall fashions hit the market. Yesterday, for example, I spent the afternoon at the mall for my daughters birthday. I invited her to bring a friend, and as her … Continue reading

How to Save Money On Your Maternity Wardrobe (and still look great!)

Considering you only need to wear maternity clothes for a season, it’s hard to justify spending a lot of money on your maternity wardrobe. Fortunately there are ways to spend less and still look great! Borrow When I was pregnant with my son, I had two friends who were pretty close in size to me, and they were gracious enough to allow me to borrow their maternity wardrobes. I ended up with a packed closet and more maternity clothes than I could ever imagine. Some of the clothes were hard to return because I loved them so much! If you … Continue reading

Selling Your Stuff on Ebay

One thing that many thrifty people do is to sell their used items on Ebay. Not only do these people generally recoup the cost of their items and thereby reduce their budget, but they also can make a profit. This is a nice way to get paid to have your kids wear nice clothes, for example. Some people make selling on Ebay a full time job, scouting out suppliers and then selling the goods. While I’ll leave the heavy business selling strategies to the Home Biz blog, I do have a few tips for those of us who can use … Continue reading
